2 Day Rwenzori Trekking to Nyabitaba Hut for First-Timers
A two-day trek to Nyabitaba Hut in the Rwenzori Mountains National Park is a short hike from Nyakalengija, involving a 5-6 hour climb on Day 1 through farmlands and tropical forest to reach the hut at 2,651 meters. Day 2 is the descent, typically a 3-5 hour trek back to Nyakalengija, offering wildlife viewing opportunities like the black and white colobus monkey and Rwenzori turaco.
2 Day Rwenzori Trekking to Nyabitaba Hut is the first day of many treks in the Rwenzori Mountains National Park, starting from the Nyakalengija park headquarters. The hike covers approximately 10 kilometers and takes about 4-5 hours, ascending steeply through Bakonzo farmlands and dense montane forest, crossing Mahoma River, and reaching an altitude of about 2,660 meters. The trek offers views of the Portal Peaks and opportunities to spot wildlife like the white colobus monkey and Rwenzori turaco.
A Complete 2 Day Rwenzori Trekking to Nyabitaba Hut
Day 1: Nyakalengijja to Nyabitaba hut
After your morning breakfast, you proceed to the offices of Rwenzori Trekking Services for a briefing regarding your two-day, one-night Naybitaba-Mohoma trail circle trip. Your walk commences at Nyakalengija, proceeding along the trail through the Bakonzo Farmlands to the Rwenzori Mountains National Park gate, where you will be registered by authorities from the Uganda Wildlife Authority to gain admission to the park.
You will then commence your journey along the Rwenzori core circuit trail through the lush tropical forest characterised by tall elephant grass and deep underbrush. This forest is inhabited by a substantial population of animal species, including the forest elephant, chimpanzee, hyrax, black-and-white colobus, and L’Hoest’s monkeys.
Duiker and three-horned chameleon, among others. Additionally, you may observe avian species such the Handsome Francolin, Rwenzori Turaco, Long-eared Owl, Barred Cuckoo, Long-tailed Cuckoo, Cinnamon-chested Bee-eater, and Strange Weaver.
