A Detailed 4-Day Rwenzori Trek via Central Circuit | Margherita Peak

Day 1: Nyakalengija (1,600 m) → John Matte Hut (3,420 m)

Hiking time: 7–8 hours
Elevation gain: +1,820m

You will have a briefing, finalise permits, and organise equipment with your guides and porters at the Rwenzori Mountaineering Services (RMS) offices in Nyakalengija, where the journey begins.

After passing through several small Bakonzo communities, the trail heads into a tropical rainforest before descending into a zone of bamboo and montane forest. Colobus monkeys and a wide variety of birds are among the wildlife that can be seen.

After having lunch at Nyabitaba Hut (2,650 m), you’ll cross the Kurt Shafer Bridge, which is located at the confluence of the Bujuku and Mubuku rivers. To get to John Matte Hut for the night and dinner, the terrain gets muddier and steeper as you go into the lower alpine zone.

Day 2: John Matte Hut (3,420 m) → Elena Hut (4,563 m)

Hiking time: 8–9 hours
Elevation gain: +1,143m

The journey begins with an early breakfast and winds its way through rugged, treacherous terrain, eventually crossing multiple streams that are fed by glacier meltwater. Long wooden boardwalks span the marshy valley floor as you make your way through Lower and Upper Bigo Bog.

Here you can see the famous Rwenzori plants, such as groundsels, everlasting flowers, and enormous lobelias. Mount Stanley, Mount Speke, and the faraway Margherita and Alexandra Peaks can be made out as you climb higher.

Reaching Elena Hut, which sits just below the Stanley Glacier, requires a last trek that ascends sharply over rocky terrain. To be ready for the summit push, you must have dinner and get some sleep early.

Day 3: Elena Hut (4,563 m) → Margherita Peak (5,109 m) → Bujuku Hut (3,960 m)

Hiking time: 10–12 hours
Summit attempt begins: ~2:00 AM

The summit day begins at a dismal hour. You begin your tough glacier hike on the Stanley Glacier, armed with headlamps, crampons, ropes and a harness.

Ascending the Margherita Glacier is the last leg of the ascent, which begins with a glacier crossing and continues with rocky scrambling. In exposed places, fixed ropes provide assistance.

Assuming good weather, climbing to Margherita Peak—Uganda’s and Africa’s third-highest—will reward you with breathtaking vistas of the Rwenzori mountain range.

Carefully make your way down downhill to Elena Hut for lunch after taking some shots. From there, continue on to Bujuku Hut, past alpine lakes and some steep rocky areas. At Bujuku, spend the night.

Day 4: Bujuku Hut (3,960 m) → Nyakalengija (1,600 m)

Hiking time: 8–9 hours
Elevation loss: –2,360m

Return to the Central Circuit path by descending via the Upper and Lower Bigo Bog after breakfast. After taking a short break at John Matte Hut and Nyabitaba Hut for refreshments, the steep descent continues.

Following a steep descent through several woodland zones, the trail returns to Nyakalengija from Nyabitaba, signifying the end of the expedition. Lodge close to park entrance or transport to your next destination for the night.
