A Detailed 7-Day Mount Emin Hiking | Rwenzori Central Circuit Route

Day 1: Nyakalengija (1,650m) to Nyabitaba Camp (2,650m)

Your adventure starts at the park gate in Nyakalengija, where you’ll meet your guide and set out for the Rwenzori Mountains. The trail will lead you sharply uphill as you pass through verdant woodlands at the base of the magnificent Rwenzori mountains. The Rwenzori Mountains are home to a wide variety of creatures, including the gregarious colobus monkeys and many more, and this section of the mountain is known to be home to some of them. You will return to camp for the night after your climb to Nyabitaba.

Day 2: Nyabitaba to John Matte Camp (3,505m)

Distance: ~7.5 km | Duration: 6–8 hours

Day two of your seven-day Mount Emin hiking program begins with an early start as you begin the 7.5-kilometer ascent to Johnmatte Camp, the second base camp along the central circuit trail’s anticlockwise loop. Get a hearty breakfast under your belt before hitting the road, which will lead you from the woodland zone via the bamboo zone and finally to the heather zone, where you’ll find John Matte. As you make your way across rivers and other streams in the Rwenzori Mountains, you’ll be treated to breathtaking vistas of the stunning surroundings that make the journey so worthwhile.

Day 3: John Matte to Skull Cave Camp

You must rise early and set out on your quest to reach the peak of Mount Emin. You have a hard trek ahead of you today as you traverse the swampy Rwenzori Mountains. Once you conquer this challenging portion, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the Rwenzori Mountains.

You will arrive at the skull cave, your campsite for the night, after a difficult climb that offers satisfying views.

Day 4: Skull Cave to Lac de Luna Camp

As you near the day of Mount Emin’s ascent, today you will depart from Skull Cave and make your way to Lac de Luna Camp. Embark on a treacherous journey across the Rwenzori Mountains, braving high climbs and descents along the way. As you keep going up, you’ll start to see the elevation change. When you get at La de Luna, you’ll be able to set up your ground tents among the stunning scenery for the night.

Day 5: Summit Day to Mount Emin (4,798m)

Your ascent of Mount Emin should begin at the camp. You will easily traverse bouldering rocks and steep ascents on this challenging terrain thanks to your knowledgeable guides. Mount Emin will be in your sights after a while. Take in the breathtaking panoramas of the mountain and the Congo below. Return to Lac de Luna camp for dinner and an overnight stay after snapping some beautiful images with your camera.

Day 6: Descend to John Matte Camp

Step down from the mountaintop as you begin your descent. A leisurely stroll will lead you from the Lac de Luna camp to the Johnmatte camp. The steep slopes up to Bigo Camp make the descent rather tough, but relatively simpler overall. Margherita and Baker are just two of the majestic peaks that you can take in from this vantage point. After you get to John Matte, have some dinner and spend the night. While you’re there, be sure to stop by Lake Bujjuku, which is right below your tent.

Day 7: Return to Nyakalengija (1,650m)

From John Matte Camp, go through Nyabitaba, and exit the Rwenzori Mountains National Park on the latter days of your seven-day Mount Emin trekking program. The trek will take you upward and downhill as you make your way through swampy terrain along the River Bujjuku’s banks. Stop for lunch at Nyabitaba Camp before continuing on your tour. You will eventually emerge from your adventure amidst the majestic woods at the foot of Mount Rwenzori.
