A Detailed 8-Day Queen Elizabeth And Rwenzori Marathon Itinerary
Day 1 : Transfer to Rwenzori mountains
You journey starts with a transfer from Kampala/ Entebbe and start on your journey to Kasese the home to Rwenzori mountains and Queen Elizabeth where a great adventure awaits. Along the way, you will enjoy views of scenic landscapes including townd, villages and the vegetation. Arrive in Nyakalegeji the village where treks on the central circuit trail start. Upon arrival you will check into your accommodation, where you will also meet the team of your mountain guides who will your next company for the three days in the mountain.
Day 2: Nyakalengija to Nyabitaba camp
After an early breakfast, report to the park gate where you will meet the entire team who will guide you on today’s treks of what you will expect and the entire trek for this day one. After registering with UWA you will walk through the montane zone an area that is characterised with a variety of plant species You will climb several ladders as the trail gets steeper you will finally reach the camp at Nyabitaba where you will also spend a night.
Day 3: Nyabitaba to Lake Mahoma camp
Start the day with breakfast at your camp, after which you embark on the journey to lake Mahoma exploring the beautiful Rwenzori mountains. The trail leads through a flat area and continue with the landscape changing as you hike higher . The vegetation is a mix of heather and afro alpine vegetation, with unique plants like giant lobelias. You will also enjoy clear views of portal peaks and Kinyangoma hills, The hike gradually leads you to the Lake Mahoma, a peaceful and quiet lake in the alpine zone formed by the melted glacier from Mount Baker. Upon arrival, you will set up camp near the lake and enjoy the quiet cool environment in this scenic place.
Day 4: Lake Mahoma to Nyakalengeji
You will wake up early and start on your descend from Lake Mahoma back to Nyakalengija. The return journey can is about 8kilometers can and can take about three to four hours. The trail passes along the Mubuku river and through open fields offering a relaxing end of the trek. After arriving in Nyakalengija, you will meet your driver who will transfer you to Queen Elizabeth national park. The drive is short and offers views of surrounding landscapes. Upon arrival, you will check into your lodge, relax and enjoy the rest of the evening as you prepare for the next day’s adventure.
Day 5: Game drive and boat cruise in Queen Elizabeth national park
This day is dedicated to exploring the rich wildlife of Queen Elizabeth national park. You will start with a morning game drive, where you may see animals including elephants, buffalos, lions and antelopes in their natural habitat. The park is also home to many bird species, making it great place for birds’ lovers. After lunch, you will enjoy a boat cruise along the Kazinga channel. During the cruise, you will see hippos, crocodiles and many animals drinking water at the shores of the channel. The experience is relaxing and offers great opportunities for photography before returning your lodge to the evening.
Day 6: Chimpanzee trekking in Kyambura
Wake up very early and embark on your chimpanzee trekking experience , you will start with a briefing about the trekking rules and regulations. After this you follow you ranger guide and start on the walk in search of the chimps. You will walk through the beautiful gorge that is a home to so many other apes. After finding the chimps you will spend only one hour with them taking photos and observing them. Head back to your accommodation as you await the marathon where you may head to Kasese in the evening to get your kit.
Day 7: Rwenzori Marathon
This is the highlight of your trip; you will wake up very early and join other runners from different parts of the world to participate in the Rwenzori marathon. You can choose the full run or the shorter packages one that suits your ability. The race takes you through scenic routes with views of the Rwenzori mountains, local villages, local communities cheering along the way. After completing the race you will celebrate your achievement, receive your medal and relax after the exciting and memorable experience.
Day 8: Transfer back to Entebbe
On the final day, you will have breakfast and begin your journey back to Entebbe. The drive gives you last or short breaks.
