Hiking time: 6–7 hours
Elevation gain: +1,036m
Transfer to Mihunga, the meeting area at the Rwenzori Mountains National Park gates, where you will meet your guide. The walk starts once everyone has registered, received a safety training, and met their porters and guides.
Amidst a verdant tropical forest, the trail winds its way along the Mubuku River. After crossing the Mahoma River, it begins a steady ascent onto a lofty hill. Chimpanzees, blue monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys, and the brilliantly coloured Rwenzori turaco are all possible sightings and sounds along the route.
Arrive at Nyabitaba Hut for dinner and overnight.
Hiking time: 7–8 hours
Elevation gain: +854m
Drop down into the forest on your way to the Kurt Shafer Bridge, where the Bujuku and Mubuku rivers meet, after breakfast. Following a brief foray into a bamboo forest, the path eventually faces a lengthy, treacherous section of moss-covered rock.
Nyamuleju Rock Shelter offers the best vantage point from which to take in the initial vistas of Margherita Peak, Mount Speke, and Mount Stanley. As you climb higher, you’ll see a change in vegetation, from low-lying grasses to tall lobelia and alpine flora.
Reach John Matte Hut for dinner and overnight.
Day 3: John Matte Hut (3,380m) → Bujuku Hut (3,962m)
Hiking time: 4–5 hours
Elevation gain: +582m
After a short descent, you’ll cross the Bujuku River and reach the Lower Bigo Bog, a place well-known for its lengthy wooden boardwalks and enormous lobelias. The wide valley gives rise to an otherworldly mountain ambiance.
Located between Mounts Baker and Stanley, Lake Bujuku is reached after a steep forested portion that opens into the Upper Bigo Bog.
Arrive at Bujuku Hut, an important base for climbers heading to Mount Speke and Mount Stanley. Overnight at the hut.
Day 4: Bujuku Hut (3,977m) → Elena Hut (4,541m)
Hiking time: 5–6 hours
Elevation gain: +564m
Ascending steeply through trees of enormous groundsels leads to Groundsel Gully after you’ve traversed muddy terrain. The Central Circuit’s highest point, Scott Elliot Pass (4,372 m), is reached after a steep ascent along the trail.
Views of Mount Baker, Mount Luigi di Savoia, and Mount Stanley’s top slopes are available from the pass. In wet or cold weather, the rocky descent to Elena Hut can be quite treacherous.
Dinner and overnight at Elena Hut, strategically positioned for the Margherita summit attempt
Day 6: Elena Hut (4,541m) → Kitandara Hut (4,027m)
Hiking time: 3–4 hours
Make your way down through a barren, mountainous region of big boulders and scant vegetation after breakfast. The picturesque Kitandara Lakes, encircled by towering mountain walls, are the next stop on the trail.
Arrive at Kitandara Hut for dinner and overnight.
Day 7: Kitandara Hut (4,027m) → Freshfield Pass (4,282m) → Guy Yeoman Hut (3,450m)
Hiking time: 6–7 hours
To reach Freshfield Pass, continue climbing steeply along the headwall under Mount Baker. After cresting the pass, you’ll be led down a steep, rocky slope on a high alpine track.
Make your way to Guy Yeoman Hut for the night after passing Bujongolo Rock Shelter, which was utilised by the Duke of Abruzzi on his 1906 trip.
Day 8: Guy Yeoman Hut → Nyabitaba → Nyakalengija
Hiking time: 6–7 hours
Get down from Kichuchu’s lofty cliffs, then traverse swampy areas and the Mubuku River twice while winding through a bamboo grove. After rejoining the route at Nyabitaba Hut, the trip comes to a close as you descend through the forest to reach Mihunga Gate and Nyakalengija.
