A Detailed 2 Weeks Rwenzori Hike And Uganda Safari Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival and transfer to accommodation in Kampala
Upon arrival at Entebbe international airport, you will be welcomed by you guide who will brief you about the safari. From here you will drive to Kampala, Uganda’s capital city where you will check in at your accommodation. Depending on your arrival time, you may choose to relax at your lodge where you will have dinner and overnight settling in after the long flight.
Day 2: Transfer to Kibale National Park
After breakfast, you will begin your journey to the western part of Uganda to Kibale national park famously known as the primate capital of the world. The drive takes you through Uganda‘s countryside , through farmlands tea plantation and major cities including Fort portal city. After arriving in Kibale you will check in at your accommodation and enjoy the surroundings of the Kibale area.
Day 3: Chimpanzee Trekking And Bigodi Wetland Walk
Today is an exciting day, start with breakfast after report to Kibale national park headquarters for briefing entering the forest in search for chimpanzees. Led by a trained ranger, you will trek through the forest where you may also see other primates including the red tailed monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys and plenty of birds. once you locate the chimpanzees spend one hour in their presence seeing them as they love and relate in their natural habitat . After lunch you will visit Bigodi wetland for a guided nature walk. this community rub project is a home to many bird species, butterflies and primates. its a perfect way to support conservation and local development .
Day 4: Transfer to Rwenzori Mountains
After breakfast, you will drive to Rwenzori mountains in nyakalengeji the gateway to one of Africa’s most remarkable mountain ranges. Along the way, enjoy views of the mountain from a distance and after reaching you will check in at your accommodation near the park gate. Meet your mountain guide for briefing and preparation. The rest of the day is spent relaxation and organising your gear in readiness for the next morning’s trek.
Day 5: Nyakalengeji (1646m) to Nyabitaba Camp (2651m)
Your Rwenzori adventure begins today with an early breakfast, after which you proceed to the park gate for registration. From there you will begin your hike through thick montane forest, crossing the Mubuku river on a wooden bridge. The trail climbs steadily through tall trees filled with bird life and monkeys. As you continue , the forest gets denser and more enchanting with tall trees. After about 5-6hours of hiking , you will reach Nyabitaba camp. From the camp, you can enjoy views of the portal peaks, relax, enjoy meals and overnight in the middle of the forest.
Day 6: Nyabitaba to John matte (3505m)
After an early breakfast, begin your trek toward John matte camp. The trail descends to the Kurt Shaffer bridge which crosses the confluence of the Bujjuku and Mubuku rivers. From here , the hike becomes more challenging as you move othrough the bamboo and heather zones. Be prepared to step through boggy sections and climb over roots and rocks. The reward is the incredible change in scenery as you rise through higher altitudes. After about 6 to 7 hours, you will arrive at John matte camp, which lies at the edge of the alpine zone, surrounded by giant heather and unique mountain plants.
Day 7: John matte to Bujjuku (3977m)
Today’s hike takes you deeper into the highlands, after breakfast, set off across the Bujjuku river and enter the beautiful lower bigo bog. Walking over wooden board walks, you will pass through the unique Afro alpine environment filed with giant lobelias and groundsels. Continue through the upper bog area towards Lake Bujjuku, set in a valley beneath mount Baker, Mount Stanely and Mount Speke. The views here stunning with the camp located near the lake and offers breathtaking views of the peaks and glaciers that surround you. The hike today takes about 4-5hours.
Day 8: Bujjuku to Nyabitaba
Enjoy breakfast in the centre of Rwenzori mountain begin on the descent, retracing your steps back down through the bog and forest trails. It is a long hike back to Nyabitaba Camp but going down allows more time to enjoy the beauty of the mountain. You will through familiar landscapes with new perspectives, taking in the stillness of the mountain and the ricj birdlife. After about 6-8hours of walking, you will arrive at Nyabitaba camp for your final night in the Rwenzori mountains.
Day 9 : Nyabitaba to Nyakalengeji
This morning, you will complete your trek by hiking down from Nyabitaba to nyaalengeji base. It is relatively easy walk compared to the previous days and you will once again through the lush montane forest. Cross rivers while listening to the sounds from birds and monkeys. Once you are at the base you will relax have lunch and transfer to Queen Elizabeth national park where you will spend a night.
Day 10 : Game Drive and Boat cruise
Wake up very early before sunrise and embark on a morning game drive through the park’s Kasenyi sector. Stay on the lookout for lions, leopards, Uganda kobs, elephants, warthogs and more the drive also offers a chance to see various savannah bird species. After the game drive return to your accommodation for lunch. In the afternoon head for a thrilling boat ride on Kazinga channel where you will spot so many other animals including crocodiles, hippos and some other animals cooling off in the water. Kazinga channel is a natural waterway connecting Lake George and Lake Edward. This is a fantastic opportunity to aso see many bird species on the boat ride. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 11: Transfer to Bwindi forest
Rise early and after enjoying breakfast at your accommodation, start on your journey to Bwindi impenetrable national park the home for gorillas. The journey takes you through the beautiful highlands of kigezi driving through beautiful terraces. You will have an enroute lunch and on arrival check in at your accommodation for dinner and overnight.
Day 12: Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi forest
After n early breakfast, head to the park to the park headquarters for gorilla trekking briefing. you will be assigned a gorilla familiar and led by a park ranger you will enter into the dense forest to search for the endangered species. The trek can take from 2 to 6hours and after finding the gorillas you spend 1 hour in their presence. Watching these incredible creatures feed , play and groom young ones is an incredible moment that you cant forget. After the trek , return to your lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 13: Transfer to Lake Mburo
After having breakfast at your accommodation check out and start on your journey to Lake Mburo National Park. You will arrive around lunch time and after having a delicious meal relax as you prepare for an evening nature walk. In the late afternoon you will head for a nature walk through the park led by an armed ranger. this unique activity allows you explore the park on foot observing so many animals including zebras, impalas, elands, buffalos at a close range. Enjoy the quiet atmosphere of the park and return to your lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 14: Transfer to Kampala and Entebbe for departure
After a relaxed breakfast, begin your journey back to Kampala. You will make a brief stop at the equator for photos and souvenirs before continuing to Kampala for lunch. If time permits , enjoy a short city drive checking out historical places like the Uganda museum, local markets and so many others Later proceed to Entebbe where your trip ends with drop off at the airport for your flight back home.
