Are Gorillas And Chimpanzees in Rwenzori Mountains? The Rwenzori Mountains, located in western Uganda, are primarily a hiking and mountaineering destination, not a primary habitat for mountain gorillas. Gorilla trekking is instead found nearby in Bwindi Impenetrable or Mgahinga National Parks. However, the Rwenzoris are frequently combined with chimpanzee tracking in Kibale Forest and gorilla trekking in Bwindi for comprehensive wildlife tours.

The Rwenzori Mountains National Park is one of the most unique and beautiful natural areas in all over Africa. It is well known for its high mountains, glaciers, thick forests and rare plants. Many people visit this park for hiking the mountain especially to reach the peaks of the Rwenzori mountain. However, some visitors also would like to know a very important question of “Are there gorillas in Rwenzori and chimpanzees in Rwenzori Mountain?”
To begin with, there are no mountain gorillas in the Rwenzori mountains. Mountain gorillas live in specific protected forests suitable for their survival. In Uganda, they are mainly found in Bwindi impenetrable national park and Mgahinga Gorilla national park. These areas have the tight type of vegetation, food and conditions that favour the gorillas. The Rwenzori Mountain, on the other hand has a different environment. The terrain is steeper, colder and in many places to high in altitude for gorillas to live comfortably. Because of this, gorillas have never been recorded living in this park
Are Gorillas And Chimpanzees in Rwenzori Mountains?
The situation of chimpanzees in the Rwenzori mountains is more interesting and less clear. It is believed that chimpanzees may exist in some of the lower forests’ areas of the Rwenzori Mountains. These forests are thick, remote and not often explored by visitors. Some local guides and community members say they have heard chimpanzees calls deep in the forest. These sounds are often described as loud hoots or screams, which are typical of chimpanzees communicating with each. The park authorities too confirm the existence of chimpanzees and record them on the list of wildlife that live in Rwenzori Mountain.
However, even though these sounds are reported, there is no strong or regular evidence of chimpanzees’ sightings by trekkers. Most tourists who hike Rwenzori mountains do not see the chimpanzees. This is mainly because of the trekking routes focus on mountain climbing and passing through higher altitudes, not on wildlife tracking. Also, chimpanzees are very intelligent and shy animals, they tend to avoid humans, especially in areas where they are not used to regular human presence.
Another reason why chimpanzees are rarely seen is the nature of the forest itself. The Rwenzori Forest is dense, misty and difficult to move through. Visibility is often low and animals easily hide in the thick vegetation. Even if chimpanzees are present, it would be very hard for trekkers to find them without a specific tracking effort.
In other parts of Uganda, chimpanzee tracking is more organised and often a very successful event. For example, in Kibale national park, chimpanzee trekking is very famous. In these areas, chimpanzees are habituated which means they are used to the presence of human beings. This makes it easier and safer for visitors to observe them. Other places to see chimpanzees include, Kyambura gorge, Kalinzu forest, Ngamba island, and Budongo forest. In contrast chimpanzees are present in the Rwenzori mountain, they are not habituated making them wild animals and there no official tracking programs for them.
It is also important to understand that wildlife in Rwenzori mountains is not the main attraction. The park is more focused on its dramatic landscapes, unique plant life and challenging experiences. Animals do exist there including forest elephants, duikers, rodents and many bird species but they are not always easy to see except for monkeys that are so many in the forest zone.
In conclusion, there are no gorillas in the Rwenzori mountains because of the environment which is not suitable for their stay. As for chimpanzees, it is believed that they exist in some remote forest areas, and their sounds are sometimes heard. However, there is no strong proof from regular sightings and trekkers have not found them during hikes. The thick forest, shy nature of the chimpanzees and lack of tracking activities make it very difficult to confirm their presence. Therefore, while the idea of chimpanzees in the Rwenzori mountain is possible, it remains uncertain and not part of the normal visitor experience.
