A Detailed 10-Day Rwenzori Tetra, Bernard & Agart Trek
Day 1: Nyakalengija (1,640 m) → Nyabitaba Hut (2,652 m)
In this briefing, you will meet your porters, guide, and chef for the next nine nights and 10 days as you are presented to the regulations, constraints, and route that you will be following in the Rwenzori Mountains. Your lodgings will serve as the site for this. You also have the option to have this briefing at our office following your resort-hosted early morning meal.
Before you reach the dense underbrush and towering elephant grasses, you will ascend through residential neighbourhoods and open fields. About four to six hours is the walking time between Nyakalengija and the campsite at Nyabitaba. While traversing the Kyohjo and Mahoma rivers, you will encounter numerous cliffs and bluffs on your hike. After you get there, you can have some dinner and then unwind for the night. For the next seven kilometres, the race experiences a considerable ascent.
Animals such as forest elephants, chimpanzees, hyraxes, duikers, three-horned chameleons, L’Hoest’s monkeys, and black-and-white colobuses call this forest home. Handsome Francolins, Rwenzori Turacos, Long-eared Owls, Cinnamon-chested Bee-eaters, Strange Weavers, Archers’ Robin-chats, and Rwenzori Batis are just a few of the many bird species that call this area home. Be prepared to meet some of them.
The Nyabitaba hut will serve as your dinner spot and your bed for the night.
Day 2: Nyabitaba (2560 m)-Guyereoman (3505 m)
This is the longest section of the 10-day Rwenzori Trek, thus you must leave Nyabitaba at dawn. From the intersection of the clockwise and anticlockwise routes, one can reach Guyeoman. Continuing through the Bamboo Forest Zone, one can reach Kichuchu Rock Shelter from Kichcuhu Bridge.
Following lunch in Kichuchu, you’ll have a 6.5-kilometer (6-7 hour) trek past heath trees adorned with old man beards. Strange creatures such as squirrels, black-and-white colobus monkeys, swimming ducks, and three-horned chameleons are possible sightings on your trek. The trek begins at Guyeoman, where you can also have dinner and sleep.
Day 3: Guyeoman (3505 m)–Kitandara Camp (4020 m)
Starting at Guyeoman and progressing clockwise, you will traverse multiple marshes and rivers until you reach an old rove shelter called “the bujogolo rock.” This segment is the cherry on top of our Rwenzori hiking adventure, which is led by knowledgeable locals. The Duke of Abruzzi stopped at Bujogolo Rock on his way to Rwenzori Mountain National Park for a respite.
Embark on a challenging ascent to Fresh Field Pass after a short rest along a trail that will challenge your knees. Mount Baker and Kitandara Lakes are visible from this spot on clear days. Your eight hours of steady descent will end at Kitandara Lakes Camp, where you will have dinner before beginning an overnight hike of about seven thousand meters.
Day 4: Kitandara (4020m) – Kachope Wilderness Camping (3900m)
Proceed south on the Kilembe Trail from Kitandara Camp. Numerous big lobelia trees line this trail as it winds into the Afro-Alpine zone. Along the road, you might see some Congolese houses. It takes about 10 hours to walk the 8 kilometres from Kitandara Lake Camp to Kachope Rock Shelter. You’ll have your meal and spend the night there.
Day 5: Kachope Camp (3900 m) to Tetra Peak (4025 m)
Because the boulders could be treacherous after a storm, this strenuous walk is best begun first thing in the morning. You are free to wear climbing boots and jog to the tops of these peaks, which were found by Polish tourists in the 1980s.
After you’ve taken advantage of every photo op, return to the Kachope Rock Shelter for some food and a night of relaxation.
Day 6: Kachope Rock Shelter (3900 m) – Bernard’s peak (4500 m)
Your pace and the weather conditions will determine how long it takes to reach the summit of Bernard’s Peak. Keep an eye out for slick rocks and other obstacles on this difficult route.
Once you’ve reached the peak, returning to Kachope Rock Shelter for dinner and spending the night there is a fantastic plan. Those who are in pretty good physical condition should attempt this walk.
Day 7: Kachope Rock Shelter (3900 m) – Agart Peak (4030 m)
Although the trail does have its fair share of difficult boulders, on your approach to Agart Peak’s peak from Kachope Rock Shelter you will see many rock hyraxes lounging on the rocks.
Return to Kachope for a delightful dinner and a comfortable night before descending after reaching the top in the Rwenzori Mountains National Park, which was named after Agarts’ visit.
Day 8: Kachope Camp (3900 m) – Kitandara Camp (4020 m)
Travelling to Kitandara Camp should not be rushed. Leave Kachope as soon as you wake up in the morning, while the weather is still mild. It takes ten hours to trek the eight kilometres to Kitandara Lakes Camp. A place to eat and sleep is available there.
Day 9: Kitandara Lakes (4020 m) to Guyeoman (3505 m)
Leaving the base of the mountain, the trail follows the contours of Mount Baker to the fresh field pass at around 4280 m, where it then begins a steep climb to the headwall at 4030 m.
Follow the trail that goes by the rock shelter of Bujogolo once you’ve descended from the pass. Guyeoman Camp will be your destination after supper and the night.
Day 10: Guyeoman camp (3505 m) to Nyabitaba and Nyakalengija
If you begin your descent from Nyabitaba to Nyakalengija early in the morning, you will do it in eight to ten hours. You can have lunch in Nyabitaba before being picked up from Nyakalengija and taken to the resort; the trail follows Guyeoman as it descends the Kichuchu cliffs and meanders through the bamboo jungle.
